How to Manage Thick Hair (5 Hair Care Tips)
Let’s reveal the mystery box!
1. Buy the Best Shampoo & Conditioner You Can
Everyone’s budget is different but buying the best line for your hair makes a difference. In my mind I section out hair care lines into three different tiers:
- You can find in grocery stores
- Those that you can find at Ulta Beauty
- Those in specialty stores or at the hairstylist
Some of these overlaps obviously but you get the picture. The ones from the first tier are chock full of wax to keep the product lasting longer and wax is not good for your hair.
Some of my favorite Shampoo and Conditioner brands are Aveda, Chi, John Frieda, Biolage, and Paul Mitchell.
2. Switch Your Shampoo & Conditioner When You Shower
Wash your hair in the right manner. Using the same shampoo makes your hair immune to it is a complete myth. There is no such thing as using the same shampoo on my hair would keep them strong and changing them would result in hair loss. Shampoo can give good results a few times and bad results some other times.
You can use different shampoos, conditioner, and formulae on your hair freely. You can change it according to the seasons and climate. I always have two to three different brands and switch it up at different times. Plus use this twice a month to get all the gunk out of your hair.
3. Comb Through Your Hair While the Conditioner Is Still in It
Sometime while applying conditioner to your hair, you may leave some part of your hair. The best way is to use a comb while the conditioner is still in it. For combing always prefer to use a wide tooth comb rather than fine tooth comb or hairbrush. A fine tooth comb can give you severe hair loss.
Use a wide tooth comb and comb through, starting with your ends, then twist it up and get along with your shower routine. It helps coat all the strands and detangles your hair. Plus it’s much easier than trying to fight it after you get out!
4. Air Dry When You Can
Everyone knows heat styling damages your hair, so I usually air dry. After washing, you can always use a dry towel to slowly dry your hair but remember not to do it harshly. After that, you can let them dry naturally. Never use a comb in your wet hair.
I wash my hair at night and go to sleep with it wet. Sometimes if it’s not dry in the morning, I will go over it with a hairdryer, but usually, it’s pretty dry.

5. Deep Condition at Least Once a Week
Thick and long hair needs a deep conditioner! It needs it like you need air! Deep conditioning strengthens, protects, and revitalizes your hair. It also keeps them moisturized, soft, and strong.
Find a good one (or use coconut oil), saturate your dry hair, throw a hot towel around it, and chill for 10+ minutes, and then rinse. Oh Lord, it feels so good!
